The workflow
Extract the lecture transcript
Paste the video URL. For a long lecture, switch to paragraph view straight away — line view is unreadable at that length.
Trim the parts that aren't content
Remove the housekeeping at the start, the administrative notices, the ten minutes of questions about the assignment deadline. Notes generated from a tighter transcript are consistently better than notes generated from a padded one.
Clean up the text

Choosing a note format
Different material wants different structure. A history lecture and a statistics lecture should not produce the same shape of notes.

Generating question-and-answer pairs from the transcript gives you something you can drop straight into a spaced-repetition system. The useful part is that the questions come from what was actually said in the lecture rather than from a textbook that covers the topic slightly differently.

A concept map lays out how ideas in the lecture connect rather than listing them in the order they were mentioned. Lecturers frequently introduce a concept early, drop it, and return to it forty minutes later — a map collapses that back into one place.
Question and answer sets
Turning the material into questions is one of the more reliable ways to find out whether you actually understood it. Generating a Q&A set and answering it before reading the answers is a fast self-test.
Studying in a second language
